Interview with DJ Sc@r and Miss Special K
Firstly I would like to thank both you both for accepting to do this interview ahead of Ravers Revenge: The Show-Stopper, on the 26th March at Club Ice, Westbury.
Questions:
Right then lets get started shall we?
1) Ill start with a question I know that a lot of people (as well as myself) are wondering. How did the recognisable force of DJ Sc@r b2b with Miss Special K come about?
Sc@r – There was a rumour that we were lesbians so we decided to hook up!!
Miss Special K - But really she's just my b**ch!! :) We were introduced a few years back and after spending numerous nights together having a giggle on different dance floors across the country we decided to become partners in crime in the scene and great mates in general.
Sc@r – We now do a lot of sets together, share a radio show on history of hardcore, sponsored by Adjamiba cyber wear, and have a couple tune releases together. It’s been a lot of fun so far!!
Miss Special K - We even have matching Adjamiba outfits for our b2b sets!! Kaylene's my evil twin!!
2) In 2009 we have had the pleasure to see you both come on leaps and bounds playing at some hot events up and down the country as well as abroad in your case
Sc@r. What is it about this event would you say that you are particularly looking forward to which may be different to any other you have played at in recent times?
Miss Special K - A new event with a dedicated promoter, wicked line up, lots of different genres, and an awesome club...what more can be said!! We're both very pleased to be part of this new exciting venture!! I'm particularly looking forward to a big get together with the Narcotic Radio DJ’s and the chatroom regulars in Zone 4; many of whom I have not yet met.
Sc@r – Looks like a really good night and I am quite excited about being on the team, I pretty much back up everything Miss Special K just said.
3) As we know you are both playing back to back at The Show-Stopper. What can we expect to hear from you both as your sure to rock the dance floor?
Sc@r – Definitely our new tracks together and other new material we have been working on
Miss Special K - Plus lots of vocally tracks and some bouncier stuff too. You may also catch us causing mischief in our own special way behind the decks...but you have to be there to see what I mean!! We do have lots of fun together when playing b2b. That’s for sure!!
Sc@r – Aint that the truth!! I believe because we are really good
friends, that does come across in our sets as we always have a bit of a dance and laugh behind the decks.
4) Leading on from the previous question; in the past couple of years you have both seemed to have studied so hard in the making of your own tracks, learning some great techniques, and having them now played by other DJ’s. How does it make you feel like knowing that your own tunes are being played by other artists?
Miss Special K - It's really exciting playing out new tracks you have made yourself and seeing the reaction from the ravers, And to have other DJs playing them too, all around the globe, gives you a real sense of pride.
Sc@r – I just love it when Miss Special k plays my tracks on her demos. Though I do have to admit it is really nice to watch people dancing to your tunes and enjoying them. It makes it all worth while!!
Miss Special K - Don't you know I'm your number 1 fan Sc@r!!!

5) In recent times there has been such a great push by the ladies of the core as a lot more female DJ’s and MC’s are rising through the ranks giving the guys a good running for their money. I understand that you both participate in creating this ‘push’ for the girls who are trying to make their way in such a male predominate scene. What exactly do you both do in order to promote the ladies?
Sc@r- It’s good to see more and more girlies taking to the decks in hardcore. For the past two years I’ve been writing an article in Core Magazine called ‘Sc@rs Power Room’ which is all about females of the dance scene doing their bit to contribute to it. The Powder Room Event also launched last year alongside Miss Special K’s nights ‘Totally Ardcore’ and ‘Donk’. There will be definitely more in 2010!! Keep it up girls!!
Miss Special K - Agreed! A lot of people make the assumption that female DJ’s are not as good and get by because they are female. I once had a guy come up to me after a set and say "Fair play...I thought you would be sh*t because you were a girl but you really surprised me, your mixing was ace!" There is some really great talent out there at the mo, and we're really pleased that more and more female DJ’s are getting recognised.
6) Since playing out back to back with each other which you have done now for some time, what, if any, could you highlight as being the most memorable moment?
Sc@r – Seeing Karen get stuck in a cupboard box under the decks after a 4 hour b2b set. God that was hilarious!!
Miss Special K - That's all, YOUR fault for getting me drunk!!! You know I don’t drink much!! lol :) I'd say probably flashing each other in our new outfits at an event in London or our waltz behind the decks to Kaylene's Epiphany tune!!
Sc@r- Every set does bring another memorable moment, But my favourite moment to me was during our set at Powder Room Vs Totally Ardcore Vs Donk. We had worked so hard for that event and during that set I think we both just really took in the vibe and enjoyed the party that we put on.
Miss Special K - Yeah that was an amazing night and one of the most enjoyable sets I have ever played. What made it extra special was watching Vibes trying to navigate his was around behind the decks in pink stilettos and a denim skirt with a book called 'The Art of Patchwork' in his hand while we were playing, alongside Livelee and many of the other DJ’s dressed in drag too. It was hilarious!!
7) With all the great production going on at the moment in the scene with all the awesome tracks being made. What would you say are your favourite tunes being released of late?
Miss Special K - I really like a lot of the bouncier stuff at the moment. Tunes by artists like Technikore, Gammer, Joey Riot, Al Storm, and coming DJ Pinnacle. I'm really loving Hardcore Slut, it reminds me of Kaylene!! :)
Sc@r – *Starts singing our own personal remix version of Hardcore Slut*. I have to agree on the bouncy tunes as well and of course the darker sounds. Though I have been really getting into my freeform and gabba recently. My top producers at the moment have to be Joey Riot, Haze, Jamie Ritman, and S3rl (on their darker sounds!!) and very impressed with Spit and Darren Hotchkiss also.

8) What are your aims and goals for 2010?
Sc@r – Keeping busy and out of trouble J Continue working in the studio and hopefully some more tours abroad which includes returning to Australia and Belgium in the next few months. But the big thing is launching a fresh new label ‘RED’ (Raw Elements Digital) to flow alongside our Vinyl label ‘Raw Elements’ which I co-run with Steve Uplift. Keep an ear out for it as we have some top hardcore tunage lined up and ready to be released which is quite experimental and giving producers a chance to step outside the norm.
Miss Special K - To spend a lot more time in the studio, and to continue pushing my DJ’ing career. I am passionate about playing hard house and bounce too, and I'd like to see more sets in that area too this year, as well as the hardcore. I also aim to try and get some bookings abroad at some point (although being a teacher it is difficult to organise without being able to take time off work in term time!!) On the teaching side of things, I have established a DJ Club within my school where I teach kids the basics of mixing production and MC’ing. I'm hoping to get some of the countries finest in this year to help inspire the next generation of performers!!
10) And finally, before we go, a question I ask everyone. What is it you enjoy mostly about the scene?
Miss Special K - Its all about the music!!! The music influences the ravers, and the ravers create the atmosphere. There's no better feeling than playing a set and seeing everyone dancing, singing along and enjoying themselves.
Sc@r – The music and of course, the ravers. I have met some amazing people through the scene from ravers, DJs’, MC’s, dancers and promoters. Nothing better then DJ’ing to people who appreciate the music and up for a good proper stomping party.
Miss Special K - Like Kaylene said...most of my best friends have been made through the scene. It only seems right to to give a shout out to all the Totally 'Ardcore residents who have been like family for the past 5 years always supporting me in any decisions I made with the event I ran. Without the support of people like that on the scene we wouldn't have got where we are today, and have the privilege of being able to play to you all!
Thank you both for taking the time to answer these questions ahead of the BIG DAY in March. I know for one, I personally can’t wait to see you both perform on the day, and give the ravers, as well as myself what we are all looking forward to a bit of girly hardcore!! (Especially after hearing some of the answers you’ve given me in this interview). Might some action taking place, as well as hearing some hehe!!
Thanks once again from myself, Ravers Revenge: The Show-Stopper crew, and all the ravers, on this awesome insight into the madness of Sc@r and Miss Special K!
